Steve Kleineman, President of SKD Architects, generously gave us a few minutes of his time to tell us a little bit about his award-winning business and how they managed to build such an impressive online reputation.
The first question we had for Steve was what sets SKD Architects apart from the many other architecture firms in Minnesota. Here’s his response:
“There are some architects that are very good on the artful side; some architects are very good on the functional side; our success is because we meet those functional needs in an artful way and [provide] a great blend of both. We focus on designing smart homes that also nourish the senses.”
We also wanted to know what their mission is at SKD Architects and how they work to make the world a better place. Here’s what Steve had to say:
“[We’ve] been in business for 41 years. [I] started SKD when I was 24 years old. You don’t realize the impact that you have. Take it a project at a time, and do the best that you can on every project you work on. I also do commercial work as well. I have clients who I designed their home, their business and their recreational home for. Everything I do will influence the way you react. I have many clients tell me that when they walk into the home, they feel calm and a sense of excitement at the same time. I’m as passionate about architecture today as I was 41 years ago when I started the firm. That comes from satisfied clients who love where they live, work and play. I’ve designed a recreation center and a library near a corporate office where many of my clients live, so I influence where they live, work and play.”
Building Success by Exceeding Expectations

“We work hard to create inspiring designs for our projects. We try to make sure our clients understand what they are going to get, so when they see the results, they are very pleased. We like to be involved all the way through the process, from the start of the design to when the clients walk in the door and even beyond that. “Most of it is word of mouth. We are in the process of strengthening our digital presence. We are redoing our website. Over the next six months, our digital media will be greatly improved from what it is today. We get a lot of referrals from Houzz and even in magazines, like Midwest Home, Spaces and Trends.”
It’s clear that Steve knows a thing or two about how to grow a business and build an online reputation. Here’s his expert advice for the many business owners out there working to do the same thing:
“Take your clients one at a time, and make sure you focus on them and their needs in order to provide the best quality product you can. No matter what business you’re in, it’s about providing the best quality product and service, so the clients are happy when there are issues.”
