More Than The Average Barbershop
We were excited to catch up with Bernie & Brothers Barber Co. and hear about how the last year has gone for them, so we sat down with the owner, Bernie Hiett.
Bernie started off by telling us a bit about their business and their team, as well as what makes them stand out compared to others in the industry. She said that they offer their clients a kind of consistency that isn’t always the norm at other shops. Her barbers have been with the company since it started, so even if she is not available for an appointment herself, the client can still see someone they are familiar with.
When it comes to their accomplishments over the last year, Bernie said that it has been awesome to win Top Rated Local a second time and to have gained such great consistency with their clients and their schedule. She said that they will be celebrating their third year in January, and that it’s so fulfilling to know how booked-out each of them is.
Making It As A Small Business
It takes a lot of courage, and even more hard work to make it as a small business in today’s world. We asked Bernie what has been the most rewarding part of being a small business like Bernie & Brothers Barber Co. and she said:
“Having a successful business is pretty rewarding. Just being able to provide for my family and provide a living for my barbers and help them with their families… That’s pretty rewarding, to know that these guys are taken care of.”
Bernie also told us about the biggest lessons they have learned so far as a business:
“[You have to let] people know where you’re at because there are just so many barbershops. Before I bought this shop, I’d driven past it numerous times and never even noticed it was there. I think getting people to realize that you’re there [was one of our biggest lessons, and that was] largely due to digital marketing. [Digital marketing] is what really catapulted me from coming to work and hoping the phone rang to having a really good online presence so we pop up at the top [of Google] when people look for a barbershop. That gives us good visual and gets eyes on us. Our reviews are great, so they see that and come in.”
There are many businesses out there that are looking to build as impressive a reputation as Bernie & Brothers Barber Co. has managed to. We asked if Bernie could share any expert advice with these companies. Here’s what she had to say:
“Get a digital marketer. Either that, or brush up on that, because I thought it was as easy as opening a door and making a Facebook page, and I didn’t get a whole hell of a lot… I thought I was fairly business smart and savvy, but digital marketing is its own beast. It helps to have [someone who] knows his stuff.”
