We wanted to learn more about this two-time award winner and how they managed to build such an impressive online reputation, so we took a few minutes to talk with DiDi Shilling, co-owner of DiDi & Smiling John’s Traditional Barber Shop & Salon.
The first thing we wanted to know was what makes DiDi & Smiling John’s Traditional Barber Shop & Salon a one-of-a-kind barber shop in Pennsylvania. Here’s what DiDi had to say:
“When my husband and I opened this place eight years ago, we just intended to create a space for people that didn’t have a space to be. We just wanted to create a home for people. We just wanted somewhere where people could be themselves, be happy and just be a positive light in our community. We just wanted to be a good place for people to spend time, network, fellowship and make friends. And, we’re really good at doing hair. But mostly, we never felt comfortable anywhere we worked, and we wanted to create a space where hairdressers and barbers could be successful and their clients could be happy. We just wanted a positive environment for people to work and be.”
We also asked DiDi what their mission is at DiDi & Smiling John’s Traditional Barber Shop & Salon and how they work to make the world a better place. Here’s her response:
“We are very dedicated to being inclusive. We are very dedicated to serving the underserved community in regards to people who are different for whatever reason, or people who feel different or look different…just people who don’t feel good where they are, we just want to make them feel good. We just want to make a place for everybody to just be together. My personal mission statement for business is,’In this building, everyone is different, but we are all equal. We celebrate our differences and find fellowship in our likenesses.’”
DiDi added:
“People try to make hairdressing and barbering this hoity-toity, uppity kind of a thing, but we really all have a servant’s hearts here. We just want to serve our clients and our community, and we just try to do what we can to be helpful. Whether it’s behind our chair or out in the community, people just know that they can count on us.”
Building Success by Being Nice
