Here’s just one of their many five-star reviews:

“This place has amazing service and provides an awesome atmosphere. It is the only place in the area that offers a legit beardsmith service to go with your old school barber experience. Wendy and her crew are talented and trained to the highest standards of the beard and barber game. They offer great beard, mustache, and hair products, including their homemade products, which really stand up to the high-end companies. For an added bonus of customer service, they offer a free beer. If you want the best service and products to keep your beard epic and on-point, The Beardsmith is the only place to be.” – J.G.

It is because of excellent reviews like this that The Beardsmith is now able to call themselves a Top Rated Local award winner!

Not Your Average Barber Shop

We were excited to learn all about The Beardsmith and how they have gotten where they are today, so we sat down with the owner, Wendy Rose.

The first thing we wanted to know was what it is that makes The Beardsmith stand apart from its competitors. Wendy told us:

“What makes us different is that we do all the old school stuff that nobody wants to do. Everyone that comes to our shop, they get a hot towel and they get a straight razor. We use quality straight razor devices that are not just your chintzy cheap razors. We use top-of-the-line Feather razors and all of the shaving cream is hot-lather. It’s just the old-school stuff that nobody does anymore. We do all of that.”

Wendy went on to tell us about their mission statement and how they work to make every guest feel special. She said:

“Our mission statement is: ‘We provide a service for the regular guy, and we make him the king.’ He’s the king when he comes in. It’s all about the client, it’s all about our patrons.”

Building Success, Online And Off

The Beardsmith has earned a fantastic reputation, so we asked Wendy how they have managed to grow their business and get such great reviews. Wendy told us that, by going above and beyond with their customer service, they end up standing out to their customers. She said:

“People leave us reviews because we offer more than just a haircut or a beard trim; we offer an experience, and our experience is very consistent. Every time someone comes and sees us, it’s more than what they think it’s going to be. It ends up being more than just a haircut or a beard trim. That experience resonates with people, and it all comes from our heart and soul. People love us, so they write about us.”

In addition to building the kind of online reputation that any small business would envy, The Beardsmith has spread the word about who they are and what they do mainly through word of mouth. Wendy also told us about how they give back to their community, saying:

“We align ourselves with men’s mental health, and we donate and work with veterans. We bring awareness to veteran suicide, and we have an open-door policy with people. If anyone, veteran or not, wants to come in because they feel alone or want to be around people, anyone and everyone is welcome to come into our shop and hang out like back in the day. People can come to the barber shop and tell jokes and just kind of hang out and sit with us. We have a real open-door policy for anyone that wants to come in, whether they have an appointment or not, just to come in and hang out and enjoy being with people.”

There are many businesses out there that are looking to build as impressive a reputation as The Beardsmith has managed to. We asked if Wendy could share any expert advice with these companies. Here’s what she had to say:

“Do your own thing. Find your true passion, and [do] that. Embodying your true passion is the most important thing. If you’re trying to copy something to gain some sort of status, people see right through it… The minute you start copying things and make someone else’s dream your own, it doesn’t work. You have to stay authentic to your passion; that’s the only way to do it. Also, get your butt up and work every single day.”

Wendy concluded our chat with this touching message:

“I lost my partner, Jeff, the big bearded guy who helped me start this company. It’s been really hard to do this without him. We’re trying to carry on. Everyone has been very supportive, and it really touches my heart that people are still supporting us even though he has passed on.”

She told us that she is trying to keep it all going despite losing Jeff, and said that she is currently looking to hire barbers.

Congratulations to The Beardsmith for being a 2019 Top Rated Local award winner, and special thanks to Wendy for taking the time to speak with us!
