Not Your Average Dance Studio
Pam James, Business Director at Center Stage Dance Alliance, generously gave us a few minutes of her time to tell us about this one-of-a-kind business and its award-winning online reputation.
The first thing we wanted to know was what it is that sets Center Stage Dance Alliance apart from the many other dance studios in Hawaii. Here’s Pam’s response:
“We offer work trade and scholarships; I don’t believe any other dance centers offer scholarships. We insist on taking ballet, so we provide a full bevy of skills. We require that you take a wide variety of dance style classes. We try to balance those things and try to provide training, because dance skills are really life skills in a way. In this fast-paced world, you can learn some things really quickly, and it doesn’t require much detail. Dance is one of those things that you have to really put yourself into.”
Pam went on to say:
“We were established in 2006 as a for-profit company, and we became a non-profit in 2014. We accept all ages, and have students from four years old to 86 years old.”
We also wanted to know why they do what they do at Center Stage Dance Alliance and how they work to make the world a better place. Here’s what Pam had to say:
“We aim to provide quality dance training to the community. We do a couple of shows per year, and we make contacts with the kids and parents and try to solve everyone’s needs.”
Building Success by Offering Great Dance Classes
When we asked Pam about Center Stage Dance Alliance’s secret to such a strong online reputation, she said:
“We offer a variety of great dance classes, and teens have found it to be a safe place to hang out and learn a new skill. We also offer 10 to 12 scholarships a year, depending on need and skill. We do a lot of work trade, so we can offer our classes to those who may not be able to afford them.”
Outside of building the kind of online reputation any business owner would envy, Center Stage Dance Alliance has spread the word about who they are and what they do mostly through word of mouth. They also get out in their community and do a show in December and May, as well as Student Minds, which is a program that encourages students to take the skills they’ve learned to create something new.

“Pay attention to your customers and clients. Make sure you are providing the services that they want. Do something that you love; it always comes back to that. If you don’t love it, why do you want to push it and promote it?”
