Not Your Average Dance School
We were excited to learn all about Melrose Dance Academy and how they have gotten where they are today, so we sat down with the owner, Amanda.
The first thing we wanted to know was what it is that makes Melrose Dance Academy stand apart from its competitors. Amanda told us about the compassion and care she and her staff have. It is clear that they are passionate about the work they do, and all of the teachers at Melrose Dance Academy are involved in continuous training. Amanda said:
“I think the first thing that makes us different is that our studio is a family first and not just a business. We get to know our clients and watch our dancers grow from cute little two-year-olds to beautiful and strong women. We have had some of our families for several years. We want each dancer that walks through our door to feel comfortable and have a sense of belonging and community. Also, I try to keep our teachers training and learning new techniques. We are partners with a studio out of California, which offers teacher training in various aspects of dance. Our teachers are part of this program so that I know our dancers are getting the very best they can possibly get. I think another thing that sets us apart is that I am also almost always available for my clients. They can email, text, or call me anytime, and they know they will get a response. I think availability is so important for customer service.”
Amanda told us a bit about their performance teams and how they are able to get involved in the community and with cool organizations. She said:
“We have five performance teams, so we get them out in the community quite a bit to showcase what our studio is about. In the past, they have danced at Celtics games, Red Sox games, and the Harlem Globetrotters. We have also traveled to New York and Disney World to perform and danced at Tufts Floating Hospital for Children. They really love getting the chance to perform for so many people.”
Building Success And Building Community
Melrose Dance Academy has earned a fantastic reputation, so we asked Amanda how they have managed to grow their business and get such great reviews. She told us:
“I work hard on our social media. My husband is in marketing, and he helps me a lot with our website and knows what to post on Facebook. I’m careful about the content that we post, making sure parents are always comfortable with pictures of their dancers being used. I read a lot of articles and website content when it comes to social media and what you should be doing or shouldn’t be doing. As far as our reviews, I have never asked for one; we just have great clients, and I’m very thankful for that.”
In addition to building the kind of online reputation that any small business would envy, Melrose Dance Academy has spread the word about who they are and what they do by finding ways to stay active in the community. Amanda told us about some of the ways they give back, saying:
“We are very active in the community. We’re members of the Chamber of Commerce, so any time the city is holding an event, we like to take part in it. We donate when we can. We like to help out and want to have a good relationship with our families and our community. I think a strong presence in your community is so important. Businesses should support each other.”
There are many businesses out there that are looking to build as impressive a reputation as Melrose Dance Academy has managed to. We asked if Amanda could share any expert advice with these companies. Here’s what she had to say:
“Don’t give up. It’s hard in the beginning, very hard. You’re going to doubt yourself, but you need to keep following your heart. If you have a passion for something, it’s going to work out. You just can’t give up on it, and you need to work hard.”
