Not Your Average Bakery

We were excited to learn all about Carroll’s Bakery and how they have gotten where they are today, so we sat down with the owner, Colleen Thompson. Carroll’s Bakery bakery has been happily serving Spencer, Iowa, since the early 1900s. Colleen and Paul Thompson bought the bakery in 1991. Colleen had grown up in a bakery family in Cedar Rapids, and Paul went to school for baking and worked for Colleen’s parents at their bakery. It made sense that they would eventually branch out and find their own perfect bakery!

The first thing we wanted to know was what it is that makes Carroll’s Bakery stand apart from its competitors. Colleen told us about their commitment to quality:

“We use quality ingredients and provide quality service. Everything is made from scratch, with no preservatives or additives. We use real butter, not margarine. If your grandma cooked, this is what she would have made!”

In addition to the quality of the ingredients they use, she told us about their cleanly practices and the importance quality holds for them:

“We serve quality food with quality service in a clean establishment. We do everything to our best, and if it’s not our best, then we don’t do it.”

Building Success By Being Present

Carroll’s Bakery has earned a phenomenal reputation, so we were excited to hear about how they have grown and gotten their name out. Colleen told us that it is all thanks to word of mouth and referrals. She said that they typically see 200 to 400 people every day, and they try to get to know their clients by name.

There are many businesses out there that are looking to build as impressive a reputation as Carroll’s Bakery has managed to. We asked if Colleen could share any expert advice with these companies. Here’s what she had to say:

“Show up; work hard, and be present. Don’t be at work thinking about the weekend. If you stay focused, the results will come.”
