Not Your Average Martial Arts Center
We sat down with Corey James Richardson, the owner of Gulf Coast Jiu-Jitsu, to learn a little more about who they are, what makes them unique and how they managed to build such an impressive online reputation.
The first thing we wanted to know was what sets Gulf Coast apart from the many other martial arts centers in Alabama. Here’s what Corey had to say:
“We focus on traditional Jiu-Jitsu. We come from the Hicks and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. I earned my black belt from one of ten people trained by Hicks and Gracie. Self defense is our number one focus: our first priority is making sure our students are able to prevent being punched in the face. You don’t have to be a master of Jiu-Jitsu, but with a little instruction, the average person can effectively defend themselves. We always teach to the lowest experience level in the room, so everyone benefits from the training session. Every class starts by putting our students in a tough situation that shows flaws in perception or skills that are lacking. By the end of the class, we have worked through these issues and trained our students how to be successful in these types of scenarios.”
We also wanted to know why they do what they do at Gulf Coast Jiu-Jitsu and how they work to make the world a better place. Here’s Corey’s response:
“We’re here to make sure the average person can protect themselves and be confident in their community and day-to-day interactions. In order to be eligible to test for the next belt level, we require our students to complete a certain amount of community service hours. This allows us to expand our mission to the local community, and has also allowed us to retain customers and get referrals at a high level. We want our students to reflect our own values of preventing violence and supporting the local community, and to continue to share this message. We are true mentors to our students, not just their technical coach.”
Building Success by Living by Their Mission and Values
Corey credits Gulf Coast Jiu-Jitsu’s strong online reputation to their commitment to always living by their mission and values, and to always training their students in a way so that they are an extension of that culture. They currently don’t ask for reviews very often, and they’ve had plenty of students write reviews on their own, so asking for reviews has never been something they’ve focused on.
Outside of building a powerful online reputation, all of the growth at Gulf Coast is a result of word of mouth from their happy students.
“We live our values, and it shows through our actions and the actions of our students. By staying true to who we are and why we are doing this, we have been able to continue to attract new students who believe in and appreciate what we are doing.”
