Not Your Average Massage Therapy Center

We wanted to learn all about Momentum Massage & Wellness and its impressive online reputation, so we took a few minutes to talk with the owner, Elissa Flannery.

The first question we had for Elissa was what is it that sets Momentum Massage & Wellness apart from their competition in New York. Here’s Elissa’s response:

“It’s about the whole experience that I’ve created at Momentum — not just one specific thing — beginning with the process of online booking and electronic intake forms, (there aren’t many massage studios that let you book online) all the way through to coming into the space and experiencing the cleanliness, professionalism, communication, easy checkout, etc. I think the main piece that makes my practice different is the intake process. I always block 30 minutes between appointments to give each client my attention and spend a lot of time with them, talking to them about not only their health history but things like previous injuries that could be contributing to current pain or causing some compensatory movement patterns. I look at their posture, assess their movement and identify different areas of pain or dysfunction. By the time my client gets on the table, they feel confident about what the treatment plan is and what to expect. We spend a lot of time building that trust, and I think they feel that they are actively contributing to their treatment, which is a key element to their recovery.”

Elissa went on to tell us that she’s been in business since 2014, is an NYS Licensed Massage & Bodywork Therapist and holds certifications in Pregnancy Massage, RockTape Kinesiology Taping, ICTA Contemporary Cupping Methods, Table Thai Yoga Massage and Advanced Myofascial Techniques.

We also wanted to know what Elissa’s mission is at Momentum Massage & Wellness and how she works to make the world a better place. Here’s what she had to say:

“I love educating my clients about things, like body awareness, body mechanics, anatomy, how movement or injuries can affect the body and cause compensatory or pain patterns, and how important it can be from a recovery standpoint to address injuries right away. Sprained ankles, rotator cuff tears, tendinitis, carpal tunnel symptoms, etc. are all types of issues that can be pretty successfully addressed with good massage, bodywork and self-care techniques. A lot of people come to me when they’re at their wits’ end struggling with chronic pain or long-standing mobility issues, and they always say that they should’ve come sooner. I love being able to connect with my clients in this way and seeing when they realize massage therapy that’s geared toward medical/therapeutic work can actually help them. …Often times, our clients have gone to different doctors and tried different medications, and they want to stop most of that and take a more holistic route. Massage therapy can absolutely help.”

Building Success by Requesting Reviews

Elissa attributes Momentum Massage & Wellness’ strong online reputation to the booking software she uses, which offers a nice feature that sends out automatic review emails to each client after they receive their massage. She added

“I also think that my clients are more likely to leave feedback because I am a small business. You really only need two to three people who think your work is exceptional to get a good book of business going, and that will lead to more clients and reviews.”

Outside of building a powerful online reputation, Momentum Massage & Wellness has gotten their name out there through word of mouth. Elissa is also always educating herself so that she can continue to provide the best therapy that she can and is currently taking an advanced course in Orthopedic Assessment for Massage Therapists.

There are so many massage therapists out there looking to build the kind of online reputation Momentum Massage & Wellness has. Here’s Elissa’s expert advice for them:

“Become confident in your ability, knowledge and continuing education. Keep up with the research that has been coming out about massage, and treat each session as an opportunity to acquire new knowledge and impart some of your knowledge to your clients. It is important for therapists to really listen to what the client has to say. Work with them. I think that piece of it really helps solidify a trusting professional relationship. People can tell when you’re just trying to sell them something and when you are truly invested in helping them. I started small; I was part-time doing brain injury research and massage for about four years. Then, I decided I wanted to do this full-time. I think it’s OK to just start where you are, even if the idea of starting your business seems impossible. You really don’t need a ton of money to start…There is so much readily available, and a lot of free materials/videos out there that can be a real asset for treatment planning. Don’t get stuck in a routine.”

Congratulations to the team at Momentum Massage & Wellness for being a 2019 Top Rated Local award winner, and thank you so much, Elissa, for taking the time to speak with us!
