Not Your Average Self Storage Center
Dave Ligon, the manager of Wagon Self Storage, took some time to talk to our team about the business’ online reputation.
First, we wanted to know what Dave believes to be the key difference between Wagon Self Storage and other self-storage businesses in New Mexico.“Customer service is very important to us, and it helps that we have some elbow room here. When people drive on the property, they feel safe, that it’s a well-kept property. Everything works. Everything is ground level — no stairs, no elevators, as my boss likes to say, no hassle. That’s what separates us,” he said. “I encourage people to go visit one or two other self-storage facilities and come see, then make your decision from there. A lot of people call up and say, “Oh my friend speaks so highly about you! I want to store with you.” People are shopping around for a good price. Obviously, price and location are pretty important in this business, but we feel that for the quality of what you spend people really like this place. We want the customers to care about their belongings and want to store in a safe place, and that’s why we seem to be so successful.”
Building Success Through Quality Service
As for the Wagon Self Storage secret to success, it’s all about providing a quality product and service. “One thing that helps is to have a beautiful facility. It helps that we have a brand new building that was built in 2016. We have wine storage in there and temperature control storage. Most people call it climate control, but it’s really temperature control. Most other self-storage places use climate control incorrectly,” Dave said. “Our owners come from a background of professional pest control and janitorial services. All about customer service here in the office. Nice product, we take care of people, and we get a ton of customer referrals, which always makes you feel good — a lot of word of mouth and a lot of returning customers. That’s how we’ve run very full because we have very happy customers.”
Here’s Dave’s advice to other businesses that are looking to develop an impressive online reputation:
“Always have steady office hours, so someone is always here. It’s amazing how many times you go to other self-storage places, and there’s a note on the door, no one’s there, just call this number if you need help. So always have good office hours. Sometimes it drives our current customers crazy when they want to talk with someone specific, but we had a good answering service. People can always leave a message, and people who answer the phone can always give information on our prices and availability of our storage units, so people’s questions get answered quickly. If you can keep a clean and secure and safe storage facility and really listen to the customers and try to help them out the best you can, you will be successful.”
