“This community is filled to the brim with light and love. It is very evident that the associates love what they do in the way they care for the residents. Besides the beautiful decor, it just feels good and like a big family from the moment you walk in the door. It’s a happy place where they celebrate the lives and legacies of their residents.” – Kristy R.

Not Your Average Senior Living Community

We took a few minutes to chat with Erika Gennari, the Director of Marketing and Communications at Commonwealth Senior Living at Hampton, to learn a bit about what sets them apart and how they managed to build such a powerful online reputation.

The first thing we wanted to know was what makes Commonwealth Senior Living at Hampton different from the many other senior living communities in Virginia. Here’s what Erika had to say:

“There a few differences, but the major one is our signature programming. We learn each individual resident’s life story. Our program director ensures activities each month reflect the needs and desires of our residents. Sweet memories is memory program that replicates the atmosphere our residents used to work in. Stay-at-home moms can do kids’ laundry, sock matching, baby cradles, for example…It brings them back to a time that they cared for their own children and the peak of the life and the joys they had.”

We also asked Erika why they do what they do at Commonwealth and how they work to make the world a better place. Here’s her response:

“Our goal is to improve the lives of seniors, their families and each other. We do that through our mission statement: We Listen. We Love. We Care. We Serve. I truly believe everyone in this industry wants to care for people and make the world better. The daily focus for us is to improve those lives all around us. That does make a difference, and it’s the mantra that’s in our heads all day!”

Building Success by Asking for Feedback

Erika credits Commonwealth’s strong online reputation to the process they have in place for requesting feedback from the families they work with:

“We have a very regimented process. We have a program within our communities that supports our families in the program. All family members have access to email through the Smile program. We can request reviews asking for feedback, their experience and how they’re feeling about us. Since implementing this, we have seen the volume of our reviews go up. Not that families don’t want to share; they just don’t think about sharing their experience. The value to hear about other experiences from families is priceless. If we’re putting good stuff out there that is valuable to the families, everyone wins.”

Outside of building a powerful online reputation, Commonwealth Senior Living at Hampton has gotten their name out there by developing professional partnerships with hospitals and rehab centers:

“One of our strengths is in the relationships we have with our professional partners. Imagine if a family is going through something. For example, the parent fell and broke a hip and now is hospitalized and then going to rehab. We have incredibly close partnerships with all surrounding hospitals and rehabs, allowing us to be that call in planning the next steps for their loved one. We are that preferred provider, and it gives families such a warm feeling to know that they have that safety net in us.”

There are so many business owners out there looking to grow their business and build their online reputation. Here’s Erika’s expert advice for those business owners:

“Surprise your families and customers with better service than they expect! Wow them right out of the gate. Don’t be afraid to ask them to share their experiences online. We make it easy for them to share their experiences. We have the Smile Program and review cards to share their experience with other families online. Most people don’t think about it, and if they aren’t thinking about it, you won’t have those reviews.”
