We adopted our puppy, Tesla (Tess), from the Wisconsin Humane Society about a year ago. She was four months old at the time and we soon realized our puppy was EXTREMELY energetic! While her energy and jumping was "cute" when she was 12 pounds, it soon became a terrible habit that we did not know how to break. When people entered the house, she jumped on them repeatedly in greeting. Often this would not subside for the duration of the visit. She would race around the house jumping on and over furniture as if it was not even there. Taking her for walks was miserable as she would try to chase and "greet" anything that moved. It's hard to describe Tess's energy, but those who had any interaction with her can attest to our spirited, high-energy (yet lovable) puppy. The first time I took her to the vet she got off her leash and raced around the entire office. It took FOUR people to contain a 15 pound puppy. The second time I took her to the vet, my vet (who was a vet for 30 years) refused to clip her nails because she would not sit still and once again multiple people could not contain her. We would "try" to teach her to listen and respond to commands (sit, come, etc.), but our efforts weren't working, If I told her to sit, she would sit so fast and be up again so fast I couldn't even reward or praise her. I figured that I would have to wait for her to outgrow the puppy stage before she slowed down. I had heard about "Sit Mean Sit" from a friend and saw some information posted on Facebook. I contacted the company and set up a free consultation with Matt (the owner/trainer). He came out to my house with his dog and showed me the training collar and how it is used with his dog. His dog was so good! After meeting Tess, Matt suggested one of two programs.. a full-immersion program where he takes and trains the dog or a five week private lesson program. I chose the five week private lesson program. I must admit, however, that I was very skeptical! I didn't think my dog would respond to the training. After one session I saw improvement! Thinking this was just me wanting to see improvement, however, I was still tentative. After three weeks (3 sessions), my precious puppy was almost like a new dog. She is still high energy and happy, but she listens! People can come into the house and not be "greeted" by her obnoxious jumping. I took her to the vet and she was referred to as a well-behaved dog by a stranger in the waiting room! When I walk her around the neighborhood, she is complimented on her progress and behavior! (She is well known in the neighborhood due to her "spirit"!) I can have her in the yard without holding the leash and she will stop on command, in her tracks, when chasing a squirrel. I can walk her around the neighborhood with other dogs! Matt is a great trainer and person. He is extremely positive and patient. He explained everything in great detail, used great analogies and was extremely supportive. The way my dog responded to him almost immediately amazed me. I would often watch in awe as he showed me drills. He definitely got my dog to respond in ways that I did not think she was capable of and best of all he taught me in simple, step-by-step ways how to do the same. This was a great experience and I have already been encouraging friends and family to hire Matt! While my private lessons are complete, group lessons are now available to me and Tess at no additional charge. I can attend as many group classes as I want (or need). Matt also made it clear that he is available for support if I have questions or run into future issues. I'm very happy I chose to do this! Now everyone else thinks Tess is as sweet as we do!!
