June 2021, we listed our home for sale, we quickly were under contract by roughly June 13th. Per our agreement with the buyer we were asked to put a new roof on. Apple roofing was recommended to us, so we went with them. Do I regret it, yes, I 100% do. Let me preface this by saying our close date was on July 27th, that was the day we had to be packed up and moved out of our home. While reading what I have to say think about this. I was packing up an entire house by myself, because my husband worked in Chandler and was living in Chandler. I was tending to three kids, working, selling a our home and dealing with what you’re about to read. On July 20th, 2021, the roofers started to remove the old shingles, we also had our final walk-thru with the buyers that morning and the walk-thru went perfect. On July 21st at approximately 3pm my AC stopped working. I called Martin from apple roofing, he told me he would be at my house to figure out what happened. After them checking somethings, they concluded to call Oscars heating and cooling (not my choice). Oscars came out and checked my unit and said that I was out of freon, but that also my unit was old (a new one was put in March 2013), and we potentially needed a new one. We decided to put freon in the unit, which was going to cost $900. Per the hvac technician the unit wasn’t taking the freon and the tech wasn’t sure why, he said that we would come back the next day because it was dark at that point. On July 22nd, the owner of Oscars heating and cooling came to our house because he wanted to check our attic and the AC equipment, at the same time Martin from Apple roofing showed up. At this point I could tell Martin was freaking out because there was the possibility that his roofers’ nails hit something that caused my AC to go out. I honestly had that feeling, because I just had an inspection for the buyers and everything was sound, and the same time they’re working on my roof my AC suddenly goes out. Martin even told me if they did hit something they would fix it. Oscar, the hvac tech said that he couldn’t see a nail that hit anything in the attic and our unit was old. I spoke with my realtor, and she advised me that we were contractually obligated to deliver the new owners a house with a working AC unit. So that is what we did, we purchased a new AC unit for $5,000.00. On July 26th the new AC unit was scheduled to be installed at 9am. The AC techs got there and were putting everything together. They were finishing and running tests to make sure everything was running. However, this is where things got even worse. The AC unit itself was working but it was not putting out cold air. The techs started to inspect, the found that a roofing nail had punctured a coper line underneath the overhang of the roof. The techs called their boss, Oscar and had Oscar go out. Martin from Apple roofing showed up and was cussing up a storm due to his roofer’s mistake, because they had caused our AC unit to go out as well as we had to shell out $5k for AC unit, which it was money we were not expecting to pay. The techs unfortunately couldn’t do anything until this copper line was fixed. However, in order to fix the copper line, the roofers who had just finished the roof that day, had to tear a portion of the roof off so that the line could be welded. Martin had to then call his boss and get the okay to pay the AC techs to weld the line back together. During this time, Martin was avoiding me big time. So, I went inside called my husband and told him what was going on. I am going to digress in this story. When we hired Martin from Apple roofing, he said he would take care of all the insurance stuff, which he did. He submitted what he needed to. He said that the insurance would send me a check for the portion of what the roof would cost, and the rest once Martin submitted the completion paperwork and photos. We also had a 1k deductible with our insurance. We got our first check on July 6th. On July 6th, 2021, I called Martin and told him that I got the insurance check in. He came to our house, and I wrote him a check in the amount of $5,412.84, which was what the insurance company sent. We agreed that I would pay the deductible and the remaining balance, of $4,149.24 when I got the 2nd check from the insurance company, with $3,149.29 being from the insurance and $1000.00 from us directly. We also agreed that since we were moving to Chandler, Az that he or an associate would pick up the check from me when ready. Now, to go back. I called my husband, and we discussed the situation, and both agreed that Apple Roofing was responsible for the cost of the new AC unit that we had to put in, due to a roofer puncturing a copper line with a roofing nail. Not only were they responsible for that, but also the hotel that I had to book for three nights because our house was 95 degrees and unbearable to sleep in or be in. Martin and a few other roofers were tearing off the roof on the area where the copper line needed to be replaced, this went on for a few hours. I went outside to go speak with Martin to see how we were going to handle their mistake. I found out he took off, at that point I called him. I asked him when he would be coming back because we needed to speak about this, and he said that he was busy and had other things to do. I told him that there needs to be a solution, because if not I would take legal action. After that conversation I got the impression that he didn’t care. So, my husband and I cancelled the check we wrote to Apple Roofing ($5,412.84), because we felt we needed a solution to this issue in order to go forward with payment. The AC techs finished testing the system after they were able to weld the line together. I spoke with them, and they showed me pictures of the punctured line as well as other nails throughout the house that went all the way through the roof, they were careless. On July 27th, we moved out of our house. What started off as a very emotional thing to sell our house and move to another city turned into such an awful experience due to Apple roofing incompetence. I was so stressed out because I couldn’t have my children in my home while I was packing because it was 95 degrees in the house, but a few times during the day I had to because I had nowhere else to leave them. I was constantly crying. I could have really got passed this if it weren’t for the gaslighting, that Martin and branch manger Kevin tried to pull on me and if they would have just owned up to their mistake. What I am writing now doesn’t even do justice to what my family and I went through. Shortly after moving I didn’t hear back from Martin. He finally called me and still didn’t have a resolution, I told him again that we were willing to go to whatever lengths necessary within the legal system to sort this out. On August 6th, I contacted Kevin the branch manager, since speaking with Martin wasn’t getting anywhere. This is where the gaslighting took place. He started to say things like your unit was old and made me feel like they were doing me a favor because they were going to try and get this covered by their insurance as a loss. Yes, our AC was older (2013), but was still in working condition and was presented to the new owners and home inspector in working condition and when they started working on our roof, it was no longer in working condition because the roofers hit the line, freon was leaking all day, therefore the ac unit was running without freon and eventually gave out. It was really an awful conversation and experience. I told Kevin that, we wanted what we paid for the AC unit and what we had to pay for our hotel stay, which was around $300. I didn’t even ask what I had to pay for food because we had to eat out a lot. He told me he would submit my receipts to their insurance company and get back to me. We continue to receive bills in the mail, and I had still hadn’t heard back from Kevin. On October 25th, 2021, I reached out to Kevin again, he emailed me back “we got the work all done. I’m working on the insurance to get it all straightened out.” As of March 25th, 2022, we got another bill, so I emailed Kevin, because guess what he never got back to me. I emailed him this “I just wanted to follow-up on this matter. I am still receiving bills with interest building up on this account. I would like to wrap up this issue as soon as possible, it is coming up on a year now.” His response “Hey Christina, you can send payment in or call to pay.” My response “The bill doesn't reflect the actual amount owed. Can I get a current bill of the new amount after the revisions from your insurance company?” This was on March 25th, 2022, and again no reply back as of today March 29, 2022. What we should owe to them is the deductible 1k, plus the remained of what the insurance sent minus the cost of the AC unit and the hotel. Today is March 29, 2022, and as of today Apple roofing never submitted the completion paperwork to our insurance company. I would like to add that on July 24th, 2021, I did leave Apple roofing a good review because Martin asked me to and honestly up to all of that happening and just thinking our ac went out because it was older, it was a pleasure working with Martin. But, oh man did severally tarnish that rapport with me. So, if you got this far reading my review my solid advice is DON’T use this company, save yourself the headache.
