Veterinary Neurology and Imaging of the Chesapeake was founded by Dr. Jay McDonnell, a board-certified veterinary neurologist with more than 15 years of clinical experience, who has been practicing in Maryland since 2004.Veterinary Neurology and Imaging of the Chesapeake was founded by Dr. Jay McDonnell, a board-certified veterinary neurologist with more than 15 years of clinical experience, who has been practicing in Maryland since 2004. Formerly the Chief of Neurology-Neurosurgery at Tufts University, Dr. McDonnell helped established the in-house magnetic resonance imaging suite, a brain surgery unit and minimally invasive CT-guided biopsy program at the university. Since moving to Maryland in 2004, Dr. McDonnell has continued his work in the definitive treatment of brain and spinal cord tumors, Central Nervous System (CNS) imaging, Chiari malformation (structural defects in the cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls balance) and Wobbler’s disease (a condition of the cervical vertebrae that causes an unsteady (wobbly) gait and weakness).

Dr. Nick and the entire staff at Chesapeake Neurology provided excellent care and diagnosis to our Frenchie who began having seizures. Dr. Nick took his time on our initial visit both to get a full understanding of what had been going on with our Frenchie as well as performing a full physical and neurological workup as well as the ability to perform an MRI onsite. Within 6hrs of our first appointment and after an MRI we had a definitive diagnosis as well as treatment options. Unfortunately, our Frenchie was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Having said that, Dr. Nick was well informed of alternative treatments and provided that information to us that afternoon. I would highly recommend Dr. Nick and the Chesapeake Vet hospital for both their 24/7/365 ER as well as the neurology department. We also visited the ER the Friday evening when the seizures began.

Dr. McDonald took time to answer our questions and concerns. I felt like he listened to us and we were not rushed. He was very good with my dog, was down on his level and gave a very thorough examination. I felt comfortable when we left his office.
