Not Your Average Business
Kris Boettger, the owner of Barn Happy, generously gave us a few minutes of her time to tell us about this one-of-a-kind business and its award-winning online reputation.
The first thing we wanted to know was what it is that sets Barn Happy apart from their competition in Iowa. Here’s Kris’s response:
“Everything is made from scratch here. We don’t use pre-made anything! We use real butter and real sugar. People aren’t used to that in a restaurant! We’re also set up in a big white barn!”
Kris went on to say:
“My hours are pretty short. We’re open Wednesday through Saturday 9:00 am -3:00 pm. We close at the end of December and stay closed through the beginning of March.”
We also wanted to know why they do what they do at Barn Happy and how they work to make the world a better place. Kris shared their mission statement with us, which is:

Building Success Through Hospitality
When we asked Kris about Barn Happy’s secret to such a strong online reputation, she said:
“I’ve never asked anyone for a review in 17 years. People like the experience and hospitality. It’s very Iowa iconic!”
Outside of building the kind of online reputation any business owner would envy, Barn Happy has spread the word about who they are and what they do by posting on Facebook once a week and doing a little advertising, but most of their business comes from word of mouth.
Clearly, Kris knows a thing or two about growing a business and building an online reputation. Here’s her expert advice for the many other business owners out there:
“Pray a lot! Ask God to show you an idea for how he made you that would be a sustainable business idea. Be true to yourself, and grow your business on the strengths that God gave you. Make sure it’s fun, too! Make sure it’s not something that someone else has done, and make it an enjoyable place for you to go to work! If you’re having fun, your employees and patrons will, too!”
