“My daughter has been in the Tiger program for over a year, and she loves it! The owners always go out of their way to be flexible and accommodating. Tara, Greg and Michael show a lot of compassion and understanding with the little ones. They bring out the best in them, even when they are not having their best day!” – Sarah M.

Not Your Average Martial Arts Center

Michael Harner, the co-owner of Yongsa Martial Arts, generously gave us a few minutes of his time to tell us about this one-of-a-kind business and its award-winning online reputation.

The first thing we wanted to know was what it is that sets Yongsa Martial Arts apart from the many other martial arts centers in Georgia. Here’s Michael’s response:

“There are a lot of things that really separate us. …We want our students and their parents to be happy with our services… We are very flexible with enrollment here. We don’t do any type of contracts with anybody, which allows our parents and our students to be able to take time off for other activities, whether it be baseball, soccer, tennis or swimming… We don’t charge any kind of belt testing fees or anything like that. We want our students to be able to come in here and work hard for the things that they are getting and to earn everything. We don’t give them anything; they have to earn everything. We understand that it’s not just about being a good martial artist; it’s about helping to develop good people, and part of that is also being well rounded.”

We also wanted to know why they do what they do at Yongsa Martial Arts and how they work to make the world a better place. Here’s what Michael had to say:

“Our mission statement is, ‘Enriching lives through the practice of martial arts.’ Everything that we do is all about our mission statement. Every time we are making any kind of changes to programs, if we’re adding programs or any time we are doing things outside of the school, we’re always looking at that and asking ourselves, ‘Is what we’re doing lining up with what our mission statement is? Are we enriching lives through the practice of martial arts. Are we enriching lives of other people as well?’

Michael went on to tell us about their commitment to volunteer work at Yongsa Martial Arts.

“We do bully prevention with the local schools, as well as child safety courses and trash pick-ups. We help out with the PTAs and their foundations.”

Building Success by Doing Good Business

When we asked Michael about Yongsa Martial Arts’ secret to such a strong online reputation, he pointed to their commitment to doing good business:

“What I mean by that is that it’s not just about making money; it’s about being really good citizens. We do a lot of things outside of our school that we’re not getting paid for. The way we conduct our business in school is very transparent. We don’t try to have any hidden costs. Everything is very upfront with what we do…”

Outside of building the kind of online reputation any business owner would envy, Yongsa Martial Arts has spread the word about who they are and what they do through direct mail marketing, online advertising and community involvement. They work with local schools and organizations on topics like bull prevention and child safety, and they have a STEM program.

Michael added:

“Even when we’re doing fundraising for the local school’s foundations, that gets our name out there and gets our faces out there, so people can see us. That’s one of the biggest things that drives people to us.”

Clearly, Michael knows a thing or two about growing a business and building an online reputation. Here’s his expert advice for the many other business owners out there:

“When it comes to building a good reputation, you can’t forget that the people that are paying you. Everything has to do with how happy they are with your service. One of the absolute best things that you can really do to have a good reputation is to just do good business. Don’t try to pull the wool over anybody’s eyes. Do your best to try to make sure that you are doing what you can to make your customers happy, so long as it’s in line with whatever your mission is…”
