Not Your Average Barber Shop
We were excited to learn all about Midtown Barber Shop and how they have gotten where they are today, so we sat down with the owner, Kevin Williamson.
The first thing we wanted to know was what it is that makes Midtown Barber Shop stand apart from its competitors. Kevin told us that Midtown Barber Shop has been open since 1994 and is a family-oriented shop where all walks of life are welcome. This shop has been recognized for its excellent, quality, and professionalism. Kevin won an award for the Entrepreneur of the Year in 1998 from the U.S. Small Business Administration.
Building Success And Giving Back
Midtown Barber Shop has earned a fantastic reputation, so we asked Kevin how they have managed to grow their business and get their name out. He said that word of mouth and Google have driven plenty of business their way. They do a lot of work with politicians in the D.C. area, and Kevin said that the mayor sends people their way.
In addition to building the kind of online reputation that any small business would envy, Midtown Barber Shop has spread the word about who they are and what they do by finding ways to give back to the community. Kevin is a minister in training, so he loves to give back to his community. They have hosted block parties, where they provide free haircuts. They do free back-to-school haircuts, participate in the Winter Fest for Veterans, and have participated in bookbag drives for children. Kevin said:
“It’s more than about just haircuts; we are involved in our community.”
There are many businesses out there that are looking to build as impressive a reputation as Midtown Barber Shop has managed to. We asked if Kevin could share any expert advice with these companies. Here’s what he had to say:
“Get a mentor. Go talk to other businesses that do what you want to do; find a mentor, and ask questions about your craft and your business. Make sure you are coachable. You need to know the ups and the downs.”
