Here’s just one of the many five-star reviews that got them there:

“The experience my husband and I have had with Beginning Ballroom has been amazing!! We decided to take private lessons in the few months leading up to our wedding, and we cannot thank Lee and Christine enough for their expert teaching and guidance. They helped us feel so confident and comfortable, were super flexible with scheduling, and we had so much fun at every class! Many guests at our wedding told us how fantastic we looked during our first dance. If you’re looking for the best dance instructors, we highly recommend Beginning Ballroom!” – Megan T.

Not Your Average Dance School

Lee Gedansky, who co-owns Beginning Ballroom with his wife, took a few minutes out of his day to tell us a little more about this one-of-a-kind dance school and the impressive online reputation they’ve managed to build.

To start our conversation, we asked Lee what it is that sets Beginning Ballroom apart from their competition in Maryland. Here’s what he had to say:

“Ballroom is different. In particular, you have to learn to work as partners. We watched a lot of people come and go when we were just students, so when we opened our school, we made the big changes that made people stick around. It’s a more nurturing learning environment. We are trying to make dancing natural, comfortable and fun.”
Lee went on to tell us that he and his wife fell in love with ballroom when they were learning to dance for their own wedding. Lee and his wife have been dancing for 28 years now, and they started Beginning Ballroom 17 years ago. They both have backgrounds in music and judo, so dance came naturally to them.

We also wanted to know why they do what they do at Beginning Ballroom and how they give back and make the world a better place. Here’s Lee’s response:

“Learning is all individual; not everyone learns at the same pace. You have to cater to the needs of the individual. Even their perceptions make a difference, especially when you’re working with a partner. For us, it’s a very careful balance of teaching a student the pace and keeping them in their comfort zone. We don’t want to push people into an anxious environment. We work with people to reach realistic goals within their timeline. We ain’t to make people more comfortable and more natural.”

Lee shared their mission statement with us, which is:

“Real dancing, for real people”

Building Success With a Love of Dance

When we asked Lee about Beginning Ballroom’s secret to such a strong online reputation, he said:

“We just love dancing, and we stuck with it, but when it came to teaching, we wanted our company to be everything our experiences hadn’t been. Our methodology is more effective and advanced; we are much more nurturing, and our prices are lower than just about anyone else’s. We are always focusing on our students’ needs.”

Outside of building the kind of online reputation any business owner would envy, Beginning Ballroom has spread the word about who they are and what they do through SEO (search engine optimization), The Knot, Wedding Wire and word of mouth. They also make it a point to network with other wedding professionals, like tux shops and dress shops, and they target their advertisements to them. For Beginning Ballroom, targeted advertisements for their specific radius are very important.

Congratulations to the team at Beginning Ballroom for being a 2019 Top Rated Local award winner, and thank you so much, Lee, for taking the time to speak with us!
