Not Your Average Plumbing Company
We were excited to learn all about Pueo Plumbing and how they have gotten where they are today, so we sat down with the customer service manager, Mike Anderson.
The first thing we wanted to know was what it is that makes Pueo Plumbing stand apart from its competitors. Mike told us:
“Our approach to helping our customers is to take on their problems as our own. To a lot of people, a plumbing problem can become traumatic. It can be stressful, and some people can even panic because they don’t know what to do. We want to take that stress and worry off their hands and let them relax, sit back, and let us take care of it. There are a lot of companies that are commission-based, meaning the technician’s pay can depend on how much they sell you. This can obviously cause employees to just sell you as much as possible, regardless of whether the customer needs it or not. By doing that and being an island, eventually, they’re going to come across other people to compare with and realize they paid too much and then they’ll never call you again. We are not trying to make as much as we can off of every job. We would rather help people for as long as they need our services. We would like to build long-lasting relationships with our customers. We want our customers to know we will be there to help them and their families for as long as they own their homes.”
Mike went on to tell us more about the Pueo Plumbing business mission, saying:
“We aim to provide the highest level of professional service at the most affordable price. I wouldn’t say we’re cheap, but we’re definitely less expensive than most people. Our first priority is to do the job right the first time. Trying to cheat or cut corners seems to end up costing people more in the long run. We take pride in our work and believe it is a reflection of who we are as a company.”
Building Success, Online And Off
Pueo Plumbing has earned a fantastic reputation, so we asked Mike how they have managed to grow their business and get such great reviews. He said that they focus on treating people the way they would want to be treated. Mike said that they ask every employee to treat their customers like a family member and to keep in mind how they would want their grandparents to be treated.
In addition to building the kind of online reputation that any small business would envy, Pueo Plumbing has spread the word about who they are and what they do, mostly through word of mouth. Mike said:
“We’re always on the lookout to find the best possible employees that share our work ethic and our compassion for others. In Hawaii, advertising is a different animal and it’s not always worth spending a small fortune. It can be a waste of money running commercials, because most people know somebody that knows somebody. It’s more likely that someone will ask their auntie or uncle, “Hey, you know somebody that’s good at this?” That’s just how it works here, so your reputation is very important.”
He went on to tell us about the importance of staying updated and professional, saying:
“As far as growing the business, We’re always trying new ways to organize and streamline everything to make it as efficient as possible. We try and keep our software, vehicles, and equipment maintained and up to date. We try to keep up with and use the most current technology and methods available.”
There are many businesses out there that are looking to build as impressive a reputation as Pueo Plumbing has managed to. We asked if Mike could share any expert advice with these companies. Here’s what he had to say:
“Just be honest with your customers and be honest with yourself, too. Make sure you can provide your customers with what you say you will. Avoid misleading people or over-promising something you can’t deliver on. Be honest and upfront from the beginning; your customers will appreciate it and have more respect for you for doing so. I’m pretty sure most of us are really tired of all these manipulative sales pitches, and always trying to read between the lines. It feels like a constant bait and switch everywhere you look. Just be upfront with people.”
