Not Your Average Computer IT Service Company
We were excited to learn all about The People’s Geek and how they have gotten where they are today, so we sat down with the Co-Owner (with his brother, Joshua Dickson), Ben Richards. Both brothers went to school for this kind of work, and both are Marines. Joshua started the company after serving in the military, and Ben join him soon after.
We wanted to know was what it is that makes The People’s Geek stand apart from its competitors. Ben told us about their commitment to customer service and a bit about why they do what they do. He said:
“Our philosophy is, ‘Money is as essential to businesses as oxygen is to humans, but it’s not the reason for living.’ That philosophy fuels our commitment to customer service.”
Building Success, Online and Off
The People’s Geek has earned a remarkable reputation, so we wanted to know about some of the ways they have gotten their name out and grown their business. Ben said that they do a lot of events in the area as well as business-to-business networking. They work together with the local Chamber of Commerce and BNI (Business Network International). Online, they utilize social networking sites, like Facebook. Despite all of this, Ben said that word of mouth has been their primary source of new business.
The People’s Geek is not only active in their community, but they are also often looking for ways to give back to it. Ben said:
“We try to work with causes that we believe in. We donate services or computers. We also work with veterans and organizations to support veterans; we really try to get involved with the community and causes we believe in.”
There are many businesses out there that are looking to build as impressive a reputation as The People’s Geek has managed to. We asked if Ben could share any expert advice with these companies. Here’s what he had to say:
“It’s all about how you treat people! When people come to us, they are kind of in the dark. It makes them kind of vulnerable, so think of them as your friend or grandmother; that makes it more of a friendship-based transaction”
