“This time last year, my sister and I had to bury our dad. Richard was so kind and helped us every single step of the way. He made sure everything was where my dad would have wanted it. Richard was also one of the kindest people I have ever met. Thank you to the staff for being absolutely amazing.” – K.H.

Not Your Average Funeral Home

We wanted to learn what makes this award-winning business tick, so we took a few minutes to talk with Cynthia Reimbold, a Funeral Director at Hubbard Funeral Home, Inc.

To kick off our conversation, we asked Cynthia about what makes Hubbard Funeral Home, Inc. unique compared to the many other funeral homes and services in Maryland. Cynthia pointed to the fact that they treat everyone like their own family and said:

“We do a lot of personalization with our services. I know a lot of other funeral homes do the trivia DVDs, but if someone wants something different on a prayer card, we’ll explore that. We try to personalize it the best we can. We had one service recently for a woman that was in her 90s. She lived in Japan for a long part of her life with her husband at the time, who was military. She just loved the Japanese culture, so her family wanted to extend a tribute to that experience because it was so positive for her. She lived near Mt. Fuji. She could see Mt. Fuji from her house in Japan, so we made prayer cards with pictures of Mt. Fuji at various seasons. I brought in a Japanese screen from my house and her family put their own trinkets on there.”

Cynthia went on to say:

“We love what we do. I’m the only full-time Director here, and I sponsor an apprentice who is currently in school in mortuary college. It’s about teaching and maintaining that legacy of being a compassionate Funeral Director and Mortician. In the state of Maryland, a Mortician is a Funeral Director and Embalmer fused together. We do everything. Our roles as licensed employees are not segregated. We wear a lot of hats and are very interchangeable… It’s maintaining our composure and our passion for our families and what we do. We have to stay present. A lot of people will come to work, and they’re just on autopilot and it’s just something that they do. You can’t do that when you’re a Mortician; it’s absolutely impossible.”

Building Success Through Devotion to the Families They Serve

Cynthia credits Hubbard Funeral Home, Inc.’s strong online reputation to the devotion they have for the families they work with:

“We treat everyone like they’re the only family that we’re serving at the time. We treat everyone like our own family. We’re not family-owned anymore… We’re now a corporation; however, I think that puts more pressure on us to maintain a family atmosphere. People are going to expect that longevity, and we continue that legacy of family-owned by treating people like family.”

Outside of building a powerful online reputation, Hubbard Funeral Home, Inc. has grown through church bulletins, their partnerships with florists, by staying in touch with local pastors, ministers and fathers, and by staying grounded within the community. Cynthia added:

“An advertisement or promotion doesn’t necessarily need to be digital or in physical print. It can be a personal phone call or having lunch with a minister that did a service for one of our families…”

There are many business owners looking to grow their business and build their online reputation. Here’s Cynthia’s expert advice for them:

“Maintain your mission; be consistent; always improve yourself; don’t get stuck in a rut. Realize why you do it, because that’s the whole reason you do it in the first place. If you have to stop and ask yourself a few times, then so be it…”
