In order to learn a little more about this one-of-a-kind restaurant and its outstanding online reputation, we took a few minutes to talk with Megan Turner, Front House Manager and Head Waitress at Old House Family Restaurant.
The first question we had for Megan was what is it that sets Old House Family Restaurant apart from their competition in Michigan. Here’s her response:
“Everyone comes because they feed off our banter; we’re the waitresses with the attitude. [We have] a fun, family environment. If it’s not on our menu and we can make it in-house, then we still make it in-house. We want to make sure that you’re coming out to breakfast to get what you want. We have toys for the kids, coloring books and crayons, and pretty much everyone is a big family. Everyone knows everyone here, and if it was your first time in, we’d never treat you differently. We’d treat you like we’ve known you for the last 10 years…”
We also wanted to know what their mission is at Old House Family Restaurant and how they work to make the world a better place. Here’s what Megan had to say:
“When you walk in our door, we want you to come in and have fun and smile. We make sure that you get enough to eat — that’s one of our biggest things is that we’re not going to let you leave hungry. We’re not going to let you leave upset. So we try to make you happy, [and we’ll] do anything in our power. We understand we can’t make everybody happy, and everybody has their day, but we try our best to make sure people get what they want.”
Megan went on to add:
“The owners are the original owners and have been in business for over 30 years. They show everyone they care. …They’ve always been very generous. She has fed so many that were in need… We’ve helped families at Christmas so that every kid gets a Christmas.”
Building Success by Caring About Customers
When asked about the Old House Family Restaurant secret to a strong online reputation, Megan said:
“We give everyone pretty much what they want. We care about our customers. As a small, family-owned restaurant, our customers make us. We have to make sure they’re happy in order to stay in business. We try to make sure that they get what they want; we try to make sure our food quality and our cost are sufficient for everyone else in the community.”
Outside of building a powerful online reputation, Old House Family Restaurant has spread the word about who they are and what they do through word of mouth, Facebook and the sign they have out front. Other than that, Megan says that they don’t do much advertising.

“Listen to the customers, and understand that sometimes, you get people that are picky, and sometimes, you get people that are laid-back. If you can make them happy, then make them happy. There’s no sense in being in business if you’re not there for the customer. [It’s the] same thing with your employees. You want people to work for you that actually take pride in your business, and if they don’t take pride in it, then it’s hard to sell anything for you if they’re not happy where they are.”
