While there’s a lot of uncertainty in the world right now, we didn’t want to let that stop us from celebrating the amazing small businesses of Nebraska!

Known for having a college football stadium that can seat a third of the state’s entire population, Nebraska is a wonderful state to live in and visit. In addition to being home to Kool-Aid, the nation’s largest indoor rainforest, President Gerald R. Ford, and Marlon Brando, The Cornhusker State is also home to a number of truly incredible local businesses — from acupuncturists to window cleaners — that work to serve their communities and make the world a better place.

Top Rated Local® is here to recognize the many local businesses that work to make Nebraska such a phenomenal place to live and visit. There are so many amazing businesses that serve the people of Nebraska, but only the best of the best have made it on our list of Top Rated Local award winners for 2020. Today, we’re ecstatic to announce our 2020 award winners in Nebraska.

To calculate our 2020 winners, we’ve looked at each business’ Rating Score™, which is determined by the total number of verified review sites the business is listed on, the total number of ratings/reviews the business has on those review sites, and the business’ average overall star rating. The more review sites a business is listed on, the more reviews or ratings a business has, and the higher the average star rating, the higher the Rating Score will be, with the highest being 100.00.

There are a large number of businesses that work hard to serve the people of Nebraska and provide them with everything they need to thrive, and this year, we’ve identified 384 total businesses that have made the cut. Not Your Average Photographers

We were excited to learn all about Elwood Photography and how they have gotten where they are today, so we sat down with the owner, Matt Elwood.

Matt photographed his first wedding in 2004, when he started Elwood Photography, and has gained over 15 years of experience capturing people’s most memorable moments. Matt has done many shoots outside of Nebraska, including destination weddings. He told us that he is willing to travel wherever the camera takes him.

We wanted to know was what it is that makes Elwood Photography stand apart from its competitors. Matt told us that the production value he puts into every photograph helps him to stand out from the rest. He told us that he uses unique light sources and uses different styles of lenses to really make his pictures pop.

Building Success By Giving the Clients What They Want

We wanted to know what Elwood Photography has done to get their name out there and grow their business. Matt said that he has started to utilize social media and has been posting his work for people to see.

We asked Matt what his secret is to earning such a strong reputation. He said:

Not Your Average Pest Control Company

We wanted to learn all about ABC Termite & Pest Control and its impressive online reputation, so we took a few minutes to talk with the owner of the Omaha location, Ryan Ross.

The first question we had for Ryan was what is it that sets ABC Termite & Pest Control apart from their competition in Nebraska. Here’s Ryan’s response:

“We’re problem solvers! We’re not trying to sell you a one-size-fits-all program. We’re going to tailor your program to your needs. If clients don’t need or want a service, we don’t include it. We also run off of a pretty strict appointment schedule, not a window of time. We give long-range scheduling, too. Our recurring customers will know a year in advance when their appointment is. We want the homeowner to be there to interact with the technicians, so that they and we have the full picture of the pest problems. We’re local, too. We only have two offices, one in Lincoln and one in Omaha. We have 12-13 customer service representatives, and you’ll always talk to someone local!”

Ryan went on to add:

“We are a full-service pest control company. We do all the creepy-crawlies that you’ll find out here. We also do quite a bit of termite abatement, treatment and inspections. We’ll do rodent control, mosquito control and have quality companies that we’ll recommend for larger pest control (like squirrels, owls and the like).”

Ryan also told us about how ABC Termite & Pest Control was founded and how get got started in the company:

“Both Nick (Nick Helzer owns the Lincoln location) and I have a long-standing pest control background. Nick’s family owned a pest control business in Missouri, and he built ABC from the ground up when he moved up here. He had an unfortunate accident about 10 years into the company and was fortunate to have friends that helped him run the business while he recovered. That’s a big motivation for him. It gave him a second wind and really drove him to make sure that we were the best! I came on in 2006. Our sons were friends, which is how we met each other. I was a science teacher, and there’s a lot of science in this business. I taught school for 15 years and have been here for 13 since then.”

Building Success by Doing a Good Job Each and Every Day

When we asked Ryan about their secret to such a strong online reputation at ABC Termite & Pest Control, he said:

“A lot of times, if we hear that customers have had a good experience, we ask them to share it. We want other people to hear about it! Our customer service speaks for itself, and we get a lot of reviews because we’re out there doing a good job day in and day out.”

Outside of building a powerful online reputation, ABC Termite & Pest Control has gotten their name out there through Google and television ads, and they plan to get into radio advertising soon. Ryan added:

“We’re trying to do some branding and keep our marketing model simple. We want our customer service to be what we’re known for. In fact, we’ve won the Best of Omaha for the past three years!”
