When we asked Rebecca what they’ve done to continue to get such great feedback, she pointed to their locality and the convenience they offer by accepting walk-ins. Rebecca tries not to overdo it so that she doesn’t burn out, and she never schedules more than six hours of massages in a single day.

Rebecca went on to tell us that she has a background in fitness and knowledge of medical massage, and her main goal is to help people feel better and relax.

More Than A Massage

We were excited to catch up with Massage at Mountainside and hear about how the last year has gone for them, so we sat down with the owner, Tracy Fate.

Tracy started off by telling us a bit about their business and their team, as well as what makes them stand out compared to others in the industry. She told us that the technique they use is highly coveted by the public, and that many therapists are unable to discover techniques like the ones they use. Their staff goes through extensive training in learning about body mechanics, so they are best able to give people what they want. They are always attentive to the needs and concerns of their clients.

When it comes to their accomplishments over the last year, Tracy shared that they were fortunate enough to open a second location! She told us that one of the things she’s proudest of has been hiring such an excellent staff.

Making It As A Small Business

It takes a lot of courage and even more hard work to make it as a small business in today’s world. We asked Tracy what has been the most rewarding part of being a small business, like Massage at Mountainside. She said that owning a small business means:

“Being able to balance your family life and work ethic; I need to be able to accommodate my clients and my family. You have to try every day to find out what things work and don’t work.”

Tracy also told us about the biggest lessons they have learned so far as a business. She said that she usually has a very go-with-the-flow personality, but that as a business owner, she needs to constantly think about growing and getting comfortable with speaking with people about their uncomfortable situations. She said that communication and learning to speak up have been two of the most valuable lessons she’s learned.

A lot of people come to me when they’re at their wits’ end struggling with chronic pain or long-standing mobility issues, and they always say that they should’ve come sooner. I love being able to connect with my clients in this way and seeing when they realize massage therapy that’s geared toward medical/therapeutic work can actually help them. …Often times, our clients have gone to different doctors and tried different medications, and they want to stop most of that and take a more holistic route. Massage therapy can absolutely help.”

It is important for therapists to really listen to what the client has to say. Work with them. I think that piece of it really helps solidify a trusting professional relationship. People can tell when you’re just trying to sell them something and when you are truly invested in helping them. I started small; I was part-time doing brain injury research and massage for about four years. Then, I decided I wanted to do this full-time. I think it’s OK to just start where you are, even if the idea of starting your business seems impossible. You really don’t need a ton of money to start…There is so much readily available, and a lot of free materials/videos out there that can be a real asset for treatment planning. Don’t get stuck in a routine.”
